Self Interest

Once you find yourself in the real world there are a few difficult truths that you would do well to grasp. One of these is that ultimately, you are the only one who has a vested interest in your own well-being. Those who love you will be around as much as possible, but you will never again experience a system which will compare to your childhood and education. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing as long as you are prepared for this reality. Those who aren’t prepared can be in for a rude awakening.

Throughout childhood you had others who’s responsibility it was to take care of you and look out for your best interest. This may have been parents, or grandparents, or other family and friends, but there was always someone else who was making sure that nothing went too wrong. Once you got into school it was your teacher’s responsibility to make sure that you had all of the opportunities to learn the material and succeed in the educational environment.

Real life is different. You are the one who is looking out for your own self-interest. There are various others who will play a role, but you bear the main responsibility. This is as it should be and those who can manage this responsibility well will be much more likely to succeed. Learning early to take care of your essential needs will allow you to be more generous in caring for others.

Many people stretch themselves too thin and try to put others first. This often backlashes and catches up with them if they do not have a system in place to care for their own essential needs. Learning how to care for yourself and manage your own self-interest is one of the most important things to learn in order to succeed in the real world.
